Enhanced in early 2016, the West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a companion travellers dream. The card for Canada's second largest airline and its relatively young rewards program is definitely suited to a wide ranging amount of Canadians who can utilize its benefits. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard is the co-brand card for the West Jet Rewards frequent flyer program. The card issued by RBC has been around for several years now and has always been a decent travel rewards card option for West Jet travel. It is the ideal card for individuals who travel on West Jet regularly and for couples or families who travel on West Jet at least once per year. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard comes with a $99 Annual fee which is lower than most of its competitors that offer a similar level of rewards and benefits. Supplementary cards run $49 which is the essentially the same as the majority of the Infinite/Platinum/Gold travel credit card offerings from other banks. The interest rate on the card is 19.99% which is also in line with most of the cards at this level. Income requirements for the card are $70,000 Personal or $120,000 Household. The West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard has two earn rates associated with it. If you use the card for West Jet or West Jet Vacations purchases you'll earn 2% of those values in West Jet dollars. All other eligible purchases made on the card earn 1.5% in West Jet dollars. That essentially makes this a 1.5% return card on the majority of your purchases save for those directly made with West Jet or West Jet vacations. West Jet Rewards is a nice simple frequent flyer program to wrap your head around. One West Jet dollar is the equivalent to one Canadian dollar when you redeem for West Jet flights or vacation packages. You can use that as 25 dollars towards any West Jet ticket to save you money no matter the cost of the ticket. If that ticket is $300 before taxes and you have 300 West Jet dollars you can redeem for the full amount meaning that ticket is essentially free as you still have to pay for taxes and fees. At this time West Jet dollars cannot be used towards taxes and fees. Perhaps this is something they will add in the future seeing that a big competitor of theirs now offers that option. If you have used flexible point programs like TD Visa's travel anywhere benefit or American Express' Use Points for Purchases before for travel than the West Jet program should be easy for you to use as it mimics these programs. Essentially West Jet is taking the best of two worlds, a frequent flyer program and a travel anywhere credit card program and combining them into one program. Unlike competing programs here in Canada, West Jet Rewards only has a few a redemption options as we mentioned above, flights and vacation packages. But that is what an airline program is meant to be. Right now you can redeem for any West Jet flight including their code shares on partner airlines like American Airlines and Delta so long as it has a West Jet flight number and issued as a West Jet ticket. This means you can use your West Jet dollars to fly most places in North America, Sun destinations like Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America as well as on West Jet's flights to Europe. The West Jet RBC World Elite Master Card has some great features and benefits that are particularly useful to those who travel on West Jet. The first well known benefit is the first checked bag free option. When you hold the West Jet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you and up to 8 guest travelling on the same reservation can each check your first bag for free. And you don't even have to purchase the tickets on your West Jet RBC World Mastercard! So long as you are a cardholder which will be identified by your West Jet Rewards number you can take advantage of this benefit. The second and also the biggest benefit that this card also comes with is a very strong companion voucher ticket offer that is available annually. Prior to March 2016 this offer was limited to Canada and the Continental U. but that was expanded to be able to use on any West Jet operated flight. The way it works is that when you purchase one ticket with West Jet you can get a companion ticket for as a little as $99. Here are the annual companion ticket options (prices don’t include taxes, fees and charges): What does this mean? Well it means it can save a crap load of money when you travel as the beauty of the voucher is that it works on any fare class at anytime with no blackouts. So you could book a more expensive Plus Fare to London and get your companion in Plus as well for only $399! For example take middle of July busy season flights to London Gatwick from Calgary: the Plus Fare is $2,074 before taxes and fees. That means the companion fare at $399 will save you $1,675!! Don't forget that you can also use any and all of your West Jet dollars towards the first person's fare to save even more money! Finally the card also has a strong insurance package that places it in the middle of the road with its competitors. It includes emergency medical insurance (15 days for those 64 and under; 3 days for 65 ), travel accident insurance, trip interruption insurance, hotel and rental car insurance. Plus it also has extended warranty and purchase protection There are four major items that are good about this card. Used the right way it can save you tons of money on a West Jet trip every year. Finally the fourth item that makes this card appealing is the annual fee, its only $99. Secondly is the first checked bag benefit at a savings of $25 a pop. That's $21 to $51 lower than many of this card's direct competitors and in that first year you get the $250 and whatever other savings you get from the companion voucher and free bag benefit. There are just a few things that are not so good about this card. I have travelled at times with a group of 6 people on West Jet, so right there on a round trip flight that would save $300 if buying the lowest fare class. First is the earn rate, at 1.5% on the majority of purchases there are cards out there that compete with this one that will give you 2% back or even more and those cards don't limit you to redeeming on West Jet only. The 2% back on West Jet purchases is decent but you can get that on the American Express Gold Rewards Cards as well and then have many more redemption options to use that 2% reward you earned. The second issue we have with the card is more so with the West Jet Rewards program and not the card itself but being a co-brand card these go hand in hand! That issue is your limited redemption options in terms of where you can fly. This card has been awarded the best travel card for Canadians by other websites and publications but we have difficulty with that designation as it can't get you to every corner of the globe like other cards nor can it get you into business class or first class seats.... Seeing that you can only redeem on West Jet coded flights you are limited to redeeming for economy or Plus flights within Canada, to the U. S., to Sun destinations and their three (at time of publishing) cities in Europe. You can't fly to Australia, Asia, Africa or many other destinations with West Jet Rewards. Now we say 'yet' because West Jet's partnerships with other airlines are expanding. For example they teamed with Qantas for reciprocal earning but when the announcement came out they also said that redemption will come in 2017. When that happens you'll be able to use West Jet dollars to fly on Qantas and chances are even in Business or First Class. As is always the case it depends on your travel habits! If you travel on West Jet then in most cases the card will make sense but not always. If you are a solo traveller who only flies West Jet once or twice per year you are better off getting a credit card that offers a higher return such as the mbna Rewards World Elite Mastercard as you'll earn more miles on your purchases that you can still redeem on West Jet flights. Being a solo traveller you won't make use of the companion voucher so you are better off with that higher earn elsewhere. However if you travel at least once a year with two or more people or as a single traveller frequently with checked baggage on West Jet then the card is a no-brainer as you can make use of the companion voucher and the first checked bag free benefits to save you a ton of cash. On the flip side if you travel to places that West Jet doesn't serve or their partners like Qantas don't serve the card doesn't make much sense. Well for the $99 annual fee you get the 250 West Jet dollar sign up bonus. That being said, at a minium if you know you are going to fly West Jet at least once, and you can even be that solo traveller we mention earlier you may want to get the card just to save on that one flight. This means you can save $151 on that one West Jet flight and then cancel the card. Don't tell them that we told you to do this though! ;-)Overall this card makes great sense for a lot of Canadians who foresee themselves travelling on West Jet at least once per year with a companion or a few times per year individually. The benefits the card comes with are really second to none as no other card has a companion voucher offer like this and very few have a checked bag benefit. When you get this card it isn't so much the West Jet dollars you earn on your everyday spending even though they will add up it is about those two huge benefits it comes with. I had a vacation booked with West Jet, due to COVID-19 I had to cancel it. They said the card is covered only for trip interruption, but not a cancellation. I told that this is an unforeseen act and should be considered interruption because I was forced to cancel my trip, but they refused. For a card with a $119 annual fee should cover everything like other cards. Disappointed with their services and consider cancelling my card. I have had so many negative experiences with my short use of this card. First, the card I received the tap didn't work on it, and the customer service was brutal - they suggested to reset my pin and then try to purchase 3 times and it will activate. Complete garbage - I ended up waiting over a month to get a working card. I still have issues with the swipe on it for purchases, and now the most important issue: Trip Interruption or Delay - if you purchase this an expect to have any answers when you need it most - you have the wrong card and coverage! We got stuck mid-flight back from our destination due to weather, our coverage with this card was not easily found online and when we called the number on the back of the card the agent we spoke to was unable to give any information about coverage. So if you are ever in this situation please know you can call 1-800-222-9978 for the claims department and not the number on the back of your card! Customer service and so far caused more issues and stress then solving the issues that they promised! If you decide to get this card make sure you read all the fine print. They do not actually fly to many locations outside Canada. So you will have to fly with another airline to get to the final destination. Meaning you cannot use your vouchers for many of the flights outside Canada. Free checked bags are only good when flying with them. So if you do book a flight without vouchers and have to fly with another company on your way back you will have to pay for your checked bags. So basically unless you know that they fly to your final destination this card is not actually worth what you pay. When my card was skimmed with this credit card, it took numerous phone calls to be issued a new one. Once I was issued a new one, it takes 5-10 business days for the new one to arrive. With the BMO World Elite Master Card, a new one was issued without my need to call and arrived within 1-2 business days. I was approached in an airport, so out of boredom applied. I received a letter saying the card was now at a branch (160kms away) and I would have to go pick it up! I phoned and said “you want me to lose a days wages, drive nearly 400km over a mountain pass to pick up a card YOU offered me? I was in a town with an RBC brand asked if the other branch could send it there for me to pick up.. SO they aren’t open Sat, you work Mon-Fri, how is this ever going to happen??? Upon requesting an account balance I was, on 2 occasions, expected to reveal private information repeatedly. When I refused to repeat and acceptable rational I was denied service which is in direct conflict to the Office of the privacy commission. My repeated request for them to clarify my rights and the Commissions authority was denied. The operator /representative(s) refused to identify themselves on repeated requests. And if you talk to them record the conversation, Under Canadian law you have the right without their consent or knowledge. I instructed that the $130.06 they claimed as owing was in error based on previous recorded conversations. If you want a copy of my conversation contact me .... Recently, had to cancel a flight 2 weeks before departure due to a dear friend passing away suddenly after a long-standing battle with cancer. Then asked what they were prepared to do to rectify. The woman I spoke to on the phone had no compassion and was of little help. I asked for only our West Jet dollars back or even a credit on my account, which I would put towards another flight - this request was denied. I've had a West Jet Master Card for over 5 years and use it as my primary card every day. I am full of regret spending thousands of dollars with this card as it goes straight into the pockets of heartless capitalists. I can't believe in a time of true hardship and loss, they couldn't bend the rules and give me a credit which in turn, I would be spending with on their airlines. I am truly disappointed and will be cancelling my card immediately and spreading word about this horrible event. I made a large purchase and when it was delivered, Westjet world elite Master Card didn’t stand behind me the consumer it protected the merchant after the expensive product was delivered damaged, I no longer have any Master Card and moving all segments out of RBC. If I'm going to use a credit card, I want something out of it besides an interest charge. Have had this card for a few yrs now, I use/apply my West Jet dollars when I'm booking & paying for our flight. Husband just ditched his previous card, no rewards at all on it, and got this same card. So I got suckered into getting this card due to the low annual fee and the bonus West Jet dollars upon signing up. Turns out that you can't use West Jet dollars for the whole fare. West Jet flights outside of Canada are more expensive than other carriers, so you aren't saving any money by using West Jet or having West Jet dollars. By the time you use the card, you're going to need to spend a few hundred West Jet dollars and, remember, you can only use it for half the ticket cost, so you end up wanting to fly to the Carribean or Europe. The companion fare to go to those places are $299 and $399. All of the base fares are cheaper than this, so the companion voucher is useless. Finally, they market that West Jet members can use their dollars to book flights to partner destinations. The only problem is you can't use the website to do this and customer service can't do it as well! You have to book through a travel agent and then use your West Jet dollars there. Also, any long-haul flight, where a leg is with West Jet, is priced so much higher and takes so much longer than a flight that takes you there with one carrier, so, again, booking partner flights is useless. So I basically wasted half a year with this miserable card when I could have been getting hundreds of dollars in cashback using another card. I have tried to use my west jet miles and my companion voucher and the policies do not allow it. Perks (West Jet) okay; a bit of a challenge to find available flights. While individual people are nice if you ever get through they lie. I spoke to someone who put me on hold forever to tell me that. I would repeatedly ask for confirmation if there were any other charges and they'd assure me there weren't but there always was. There is absolutely no point to paying for this card. There was also some glitch between my bank and this card and payments didn't connect. It's the only bill I've ever had trouble with; never did figure out the cause. Not worth the frustration and expense so I cancelled card. They do not deliver this card you have to go to the bank to pick it up ( waste of valuable time). "Hi we were wondering why you haven't activated your card? At the bank they set it up wrong, so I returned to the bank to get it rectified. I called telephone banking twice- was on hold for 20 minutes each time. " In the end, no one helped, I finally got my card activated on my own through the website. Always pay off the balance so I don't care what the interest is. Now I am trying to get the app working, app matches the activation process... I will see if this card serves me this year, only because I want the Westjet rewards, if this is how the activity on this card is going to be I will not be renewing. I have had several shocking moments with the credit card. And you have to pay it off to the dime every month. In addition to accumulating West Jet dollars to apply to flights you get a free checked bag on all WJ flights and an annual $99 companion flight anywhere in North America. I had a balance of $17,000ish in a high spending month (I use it for work), and cash flow was low but I made sure that I paid $15,000 (worked hard at this) by the due date, so interest would be minimal. Interest was charged on the full $17,000ish, this is how this card works. If you pay even $1 short, you might as well have paid nothing, interest will be charged on the full amount. I usually pay my cards in full, but sometimes you just can't.

One of the visa reps mention they sometimes have promotions to get 15% more points on conversion. Edit: people are mentioning the companion flight benefits but how about the usage of actual points? Keep in mind the reward exchange from RBC Infinite is pretty awful. I have the Infinite Avion, which has an annual $120 fee. Got the 15000 points for signing up and accumulated about 80000 more on purchases. Just recently used up 92xxx points for about $800 worth in rewards. So technically, it cost $92000 to get $800 back, plus the annual fee. If you use the free cards such as the RBC Cash Back, which gives 1% back on all purchases and 2% on groceries, you would have gotten $920 back instead of $800 from a restricted catalogue. The only way I can now justify keeping this card is for flights that are only adjacent to Alberta, since it costs 15000 points for a round trip to any city. It still isn't even worth it to accumulate points for long haul domestic or international flights because of the maximum ticket price as per the redemption grid. You'll get better value converting out your points to Avios. For example YEG or YYC to Seattle is only 7,500 points. American Airlines has some good redemptions too, you can see how many miles it will cost on their site before transferring the points. Just do a search and check the use miles box The big perk of the Westjet card is the companion fare. If you have a travel companion and fly West Jet the card makes a lot of sense. If you travel solo or aren't particularly loyal to West Jet the Avion card makes more sense because it has more partners and you can even transfer to West Jet if you change your mind. RBC lets you product change cards if you find the card isn't working for you. I had the same choice and I went for West jet Elite given the tradeoffs and my spending level. My monthly spending were below 1000$ a month, at which rate even if Avion offered attractive conversion options, they were useless for me. In comparison, on it's own WJ seemed like an inferior card. But the companion pass baggage fee made me go for it. I looked at the use of west jet dollars, and between Vancouver and Toronto, I could get a one way flight for as low as 125 west jet dollars tax. So welcome bonus was worth a return flight for me (Avion bonus would have covered only the 1-way trip, in comparison. The companion pass benefits, although were attractive (and made me chose WJ), seemed somewhat tricky to me. There are times when YVR-YYZ flights get to 500$ , where a companion seems like it would be a big benefit. However, I can only use companion pass when I also fly, and for return flights. For high-price days, I would have to suck up one high price ticket (and Kayak etc are ruled out). In comparison, Avion gives 1 RBC point per dollar ( 25% if used for travel related conversions). So the companion pass benefits would be somewhat negated by the higher ticket price. I would need 15000 Avion points for a 1-way flight redemption in the US (with a flight price cap of 350$). Nevertheless, it seemed worth much more than the yearly fee. I could get a 1 way flight in Canada-US for 125-200 WJ dollars plus tax (~35-50$) with seasonal availability. Pretty lame my 4 year old daughters ticket does not count towards my total spend for loyalty points. Does anyone even worry about loyalty points just just Use the companion pass and Westjet dollars then rinse and repeat? I didn't know that about the loyalty points, I booked a flight for me and wifey for January so haven't received any of the points yet, I thought I was going to receive points for the two of us. Yeah people don't use it for the loyalty points, it's only 1% anyway, nothing compared to the welcome reward and companion voucher. Some people who fly with Westjet every year find the AF worth it just for the free luggage check-in and the companion voucher (can easily be worth hundreds)This isn't the case, it just takes a statement period to show up. I booked a fare for 3 people back in August which totaled just over 1k. My August statement reflected a 1.5% WJD based on my spend for the month which included all 3 fares. This showed us as WS RBC World MC in my WJD account statement. I also received 5 WJD in august which was shown as WS Flight: XXX to XXX. This amount to 0.5% making the total 2% in WJD for this flight. I was more speaking to not getting credit for the spend of each ticket for West Jet Tier. It wasn't instant and was reflected on the 16th which is my statement date. (Teal, silver, gold) only my ticket (not my daughter's or wife's) counted towards yearly spend. If you spend $6k a year with West Jet your WJ earn rate goes to 5% through loyalty rewards plus the 2% from your West Jet Master Card. I think I will still get the whole dollars for the spend, just not the tier credit. Here is an example of what I did: Booked me and the wife to go to Palm Springs, Each ticket Round trip is $600 for a total of $1200. Nice direct flights at good times from YYZ in high season. I use the companion pass and the wife's ticket goes from $600, to only $99 fees After all said and done I save around $400 from full price. For Hawaii and Mexico the companion pass is $299 and for Europe $399. If you want to churn I bounce between the Westjet card and Air Alaska. Cost was around $700 pp including about $100 in taxes and fees. Booked by phone as I wanted to use Westjet dollars from both our accounts and the companion fare. Btw, free accommodation using SPGNo conditions I’m aware of and have booked a number of companion fare flights. Ended up paying $1100 (some $ included WJ$ welcome bonus and $299 100 companion fare). My husband and I use both passes every year so each have a card. If in doubt, I call in to book rather than booking online. Basically, the second ticket is $99/299/399 plus taxes. I understand if you booked a plus seat, the companion could get a plus seat as well. Although we don't have the same gamut of credit card opportunities as our neighbors to the south, there's still a wealth of bonuses available for the taking.
